Ahora, HGST ha patentado con éxito el primer proceso de desarrollo de helio; Tecnología Helioseal™.

Las nuevas unidades están selladas y contienen helio, en lugar de aire. Debido a que el helio tiene una séptima parte de la densidad del aire, la reducción de la fricción de los discos giratorios reduce la potencia eléctrica consumida por el motor de la unidad de disco duro. Permite colocar más discos juntos y que las pistas de datos estén más cerca en cada plato, aumentando ambos la capacidad de almacenamiento de datos de una unidad. El HDD helio trabaja más tranquilo y fresco, lo que requiere menos enfriamiento externo. Como resultado, la tecnología única 7Stac™ de HGST permite un máximo de siete discos, con unidades de helio 6 TB, consumiendo un 23% menos de energía, o 49% menos vatios por terabyte de capacidad de almacenamiento de datos.

Este sello duradero también abre la puerta a la utilización de los discos duros en entornos no tradicionales como los sistemas de refrigeración por inmersión, una tecnología de refrigeración nuevo centro de datos. Los discos duros llenos de aire convencionales, que deben “respirar” para dar cabida a los cambios en la presión del aire, no pueden ser sumergidos en cualquier líquido de refrigeración.

Con la introducción de nuestras unidades de 8 TB Ultrastar HE8 en 2014, aún mayores ahorros de TCO se pueden realizar.
